Nava Pūjā (Preface)

PREFACE

I am pleased to write the Preface to this, the third reprint of the Nava Pūjā. The first edition proved to be extremely popular and has been unavailable for some time. There is a great need for a Pūjā that is appropriate to the modern world and yet at the same time harmonizes with Buddhist tradition and the Nava Pūjā is one of several attempts that have been made in the past few years to fulfill this need.

It is called Nava Pūjā because it is both new (nava) and because it consists of nine (nava) parts.

For daily devotions, it is suggested that parts 1, 2, 3, 4A, 4C, 4E and 9 be used. For group worship, parts 1, 2, 3, all of parts 4, 5, 8, and 9 should be used with a reading from Buddhist text inserted between parts 4F and 5. On special occasions, the whole of the Pūjā can be done.

Those who take care to perform the Nava Pūjā regularly will derive great strength from it and find its purifying and inspirational effect an important part of their practice.
