Maṅgala Sutta || The Discourse on Blessings
ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṁ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme.
Atha kho aññatarā devatā abhikkantāya rattiyā abhikkantavaṇṇā kevalakappaṁ jetavanaṁ obhāsetvā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ aṭṭhāsi.
Ekamantaṁ ṭhitā kho sā devatā bhagavantaṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi:
Thus have I heard.
At one time, the Lord was staying at Anathapindika's Garden, in the Jeta grove, near Savatthi.
Then, as the night was far spent, a deity whose radiance lit up the entire grove came to the presence of the Lord, drew near, saluted him and standing at one side addressed him in verse:
1. “Bahū devā manussā ca,
maṅgalāni acintayuṁ;
Ākaṅkhamānā sotthānaṁ,
brūhi maṅgalamuttamaṁ”.
1. “Bahū devā manussā ca,
maṅgalāni acintayuṁ;
Ākaṅkhamānā sotthānaṁ,
brūhi maṅgalamuttamaṁ”.
Many humans and many gods,
Yearning after what is good,
Have thought about what is a blessing,
Pray, tell me the highest blessing.
2. “Asevanā ca bālānaṁ,
paṇḍitānañca sevanā;
Pūjā ca pūjaneyyānaṁ,
etaṁ maṅgalamuttamaṁ.
Not to associate with fools,
To keep the company of the wise,
2. “Asevanā ca bālānaṁ,
paṇḍitānañca sevanā;
Pūjā ca pūjaneyyānaṁ,
etaṁ maṅgalamuttamaṁ.
Not to associate with fools,
To keep the company of the wise,
To respect those worthy of respect,
This is the highest blessing.
3. Patirūpadesavāso ca,
pubbe ca katapuññatā;
Attasammāpaṇidhi ca,
etaṁ maṅgalamuttamaṁ.
3. Patirūpadesavāso ca,
pubbe ca katapuññatā;
Attasammāpaṇidhi ca,
etaṁ maṅgalamuttamaṁ.
To have a suitable place to live,
To have done good deeds in the past,
And to set oneself on the right course,
This is the highest blessing.
4. Bāhusaccañca sippañca,
vinayo ca susikkhito;
Subhāsitā ca yā vācā,
etaṁ maṅgalamuttamaṁ.
4. Bāhusaccañca sippañca,
vinayo ca susikkhito;
Subhāsitā ca yā vācā,
etaṁ maṅgalamuttamaṁ.
Wide learning, perfect handicraft,
A highly trained discipline,
Always speaking pleasant speech,
This is the highest blessing.
5. Mātāpituupaṭṭhānaṁ,
puttadārassa saṅgaho;
Anākulā ca kammantā,
etaṁ maṅgalamuttamaṁ.
5. Mātāpituupaṭṭhānaṁ,
puttadārassa saṅgaho;
Anākulā ca kammantā,
etaṁ maṅgalamuttamaṁ.
The support of mother and father,
The cherishing of spouse and child,
And a peaceful occupation,
This is the highest blessing.
6. Dānañca dhammacariyā ca,
ñātakānañca saṅgaho;
Anavajjāni kammāni,
etaṁ maṅgalamuttamaṁ.
6. Dānañca dhammacariyā ca,
ñātakānañca saṅgaho;
Anavajjāni kammāni,
etaṁ maṅgalamuttamaṁ.
Generosity and righteous conduct,
The helping of one's relatives,
And blameless actions always done,
This is the highest blessing.
7. Āratī viratī pāpā,
majjapānā ca saṁyamo;
Appamādo ca dhammesu,
etaṁ maṅgalamuttamaṁ.
To cease and abstain from evil,
Avoiding all intoxicants,
And steadfastness in virtues,
This is the highest blessing.
8. Gāravo ca nivāto ca,
santuṭṭhi ca kataññutā;
Kālena dhammassavanaṁ,
etaṁ maṅgalamuttamaṁ.
8. Gāravo ca nivāto ca,
santuṭṭhi ca kataññutā;
Kālena dhammassavanaṁ,
etaṁ maṅgalamuttamaṁ.
Reverence and humility,
Contentment and gratitude,
Hearing the Dhamma from time to time,
This is the highest blessing.
9. Khantī ca sovacassatā,
samaṇānañca dassanaṁ;
Kālena dhammasākacchā,
etaṁ maṅgalamuttamaṁ.
9. Khantī ca sovacassatā,
samaṇānañca dassanaṁ;
Kālena dhammasākacchā,
etaṁ maṅgalamuttamaṁ.
Patience and obedience,
To often visit holy ones,
Dhamma talks from time to time,
This is the highest blessing.
10. Tapo ca brahmacariyañca,
ariyasaccāna dassanaṁ;
Nibbānasacchikiriyā ca,
etaṁ maṅgalamuttamaṁ.
10. Tapo ca brahmacariyañca,
ariyasaccāna dassanaṁ;
Nibbānasacchikiriyā ca,
etaṁ maṅgalamuttamaṁ.
Self control and holy life,
To understand the Noble Truths,
And the realization of Nirvana,
This is the highest blessing.
11. Phuṭṭhassa lokadhammehi,
cittaṁ yassa na kampati;
Asokaṁ virajaṁ khemaṁ,
etaṁ maṅgalamuttamaṁ.
11. Phuṭṭhassa lokadhammehi,
cittaṁ yassa na kampati;
Asokaṁ virajaṁ khemaṁ,
etaṁ maṅgalamuttamaṁ.
Those whose minds remain unmoved,
When touched by the problems of the world,
Sorrowless, stainless and secure,
This is the highest blessing.
12. Etādisāni katvāna,
Sabbattha maparājitā;
Sabbattha sotthiṁ gacchanti,
Taṁ tesaṁ maṅgalamuttaman”ti.
12. Etādisāni katvāna,
Sabbattha maparājitā;
Sabbattha sotthiṁ gacchanti,
Taṁ tesaṁ maṅgalamuttaman”ti.
To them fulfilling all these things,
Everywhere invincible,
In every way moving happily,
